The Battle For South Africa

“If My people who are called by My Name will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sins and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

Most readers would have noticed in the news that the ruling party in the Government of South Africa - the ANC - has been engaged in disgraceful "in house fighting" that has caused a political split. Is this a judgment from God? Reading Scripture and the following article written by Dr. Peter Hammond of Frontline Fellowship, the ANC, all political parties and their members, including any professing Christian who has voted in favour of ungodly policies being promulgated into ungodly laws of the land, each and every person needs to repent of their atrocious, wicked and evil deeds committed against a Holy and Just God.

On the 4th November 2008 America goes to the polls. In 2009, Lord willing, South Africans will be going to the polls and it will be atime when all true Christians will need to stand up and vote with their faith - are you for God or against God. The political party is not the issue. Do we side with the devil's schemes or do we vote for Christian politians
to govern this nation. Naturally we vote for Christian politians. We know that the friends of the world are enemies of God (James 4:4), but Christian, what are you doing to reach out to these lost souls so that they too will also vote for God and His Sovereign rule "on earth as it is in heaven"? (Matthew 6:10)

Similarities Between America and South Africa

There are some intriguing similarities between the history of the United States of America and that of South Africa.

Shortly after Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Diaz first landed on the shores of South Africa in 1488, the Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas in 1492.

From the 1600s onwards both America and South Africa were settled by pilgrims from Holland, France, England, Scotland and Germany seeking religious freedom.

While American pioneers were moving westwards in horse drawn covered wagons to settle the vast, mostly uninhabited interior, South African Voortrekkers (Pioneers) were embarking on the Great Trek northwards and eastwards, also in covered wagons, although ours were drawn by oxen. Just as the American pioneers had to cross the Rocky Mountains, so the Voortrekkers crossed the vast Drakensberg Mountains. As the pioneers drew their wagons in a circle to defend their families from hostile attacks, so the Voortrekkers formed the Laager.

Both South Africa and America had their Gold Rush. Both our countries fought the redcoats. Both our nations endured a vicious war between the states. South Africa was even known as the Union of South Africa (USA) between 1910 and 1960.

The leaders of this wonderful nation need to repent and hope God will hear their pleas to save them from hell.

A Harvest of Death and Destruction

Those who doubt that the real conflict in South Africa has been a spiritual one need only look at some of the fruit of the ANC government:

Over 700,000 babies have been killed by abortion in South Africa – officially, legally, often with tax payers’ money – since Nelson Mandela legalised abortion on demand, 1 February 1997. As head of the ANC Mandela didn’t even allow his parliamentarians a conscience vote, they were forced to vote for abortion.

Over 800,000 women and children have been raped in the 14 years of ANC rule – while pornography has been legalised. Less than 7% of reported rapes result in convictions.

Over 300,000 people have been murdered in South Africa since 1994, while the ANC has steadfastly refused to consider reinstating the death penalty for murder.

The Ministry of Education has evidenced a consistent hostility to Christianity, insensitivity to the concerns of parents and prejudice against the Bible. Kadar Asmal’s anti-Christian policies and the unworkable Curriculum 2005 Outcome-Based Education dumbed down education and turned government schools into recruitment centres for radical homosexual groups.

Corruption flourished under the ANC to such an extent that the ANC began being referred to on the streets as the “Abortion, Nepotism and Corruption party.”

While state TV, which is supported by compulsory “licences”, broadcast propaganda and pornography, numerous Christian and community radio stations in South Africa were arbitrarily closed down by the state ICASA.

The ANC’s Affirmative Action and blind support for Mugabe’s racist and tyrannical policies in Zimbabwe chased away countless investors and cost the South African economy millions of jobs and billions of rands. The rand under the ANC has plummeted to barely R8 to the US dollar.

2010 Gospel Tract - Your Winner's Medal

Prior to my first time ever to leave the shores of South Africa and go abroad to the Ambassadors' Academy held in Southern California, USA - under the ministry of Living Waters - for which I thank God for making a way for me to experience evangelism training by brothers and sisters in Christ who are on fire in fulfilling the Great Commission given to us - the Lord had placed upon my heart the desire to design a Gospel tract titled "2010". This particular tract is designed with the FIFA World Cup in mind to be held in South Africa 2010, Lord willing, and although my initial design was not of a high standard, I requested the able assistance of a Christian ministry A.O.G. Youth Press to assist in the finished design and printing of the initial batch of 5000 tracts.

The Law and the Gospel is now finding its way into peoples' hands, lives and homes in a predominately "soccer-mad" country. Most people take the tract thinking it has details pertaining to the future event being the World Cup, not realising that it deals with the ultimate future event of death and Judgment Day. We then transition from the natural to the spiritual by letting them know that it is a Gospel tract that deals with one's life and death.

My dear brother-in-Christ and faithful fishing buddy Dr. Mark McDonogh (pictured above) - yeah, a real life doctor like the Apostle Luke - has a wonderful opening line when handing out the 2010 tract that says, "What is the goal of your life?" The springboard is that just as with the game of soccer has the object that you score goals, so is it with your life - before you die the goal of your life should be that you are in right standing with God.


Here is the contents of the 2010 Gospel Tract - proclaiming the Law and the Gospel of Grace --

You find yourself daily trusting in planes, trains and automobiles, mechanical equipment and human decisions. Just getting to this place you possibly placed your trust and life in the hands of persons you had not met before and man made things.

Statistics reveal that as many as 150 000 people die daily in any 24 hour period. You might be wondering why this information is being made available to you. The reason is that daily we are a breath away from dying and the reality is that we will some day meet this inevitable event. Will you be ready to pass on into eternity?

Think for a moment of the following three sporting tragedies that took place 'somewhat unexpectantly':

∙ 1958 - The Munich Disaster - On 6 February the Manchester United team were on their way back from a European Cup-tie in Belgrade. They had stopped in Munich and were taking off again in bitterly cold, bleak conditions when the plane suddenly dipped and crashed even before it was clear of the airport. Eight players, eight journalists and seven others, including United officials and air crew, lost their lives.

∙ April 15, 1989 at the Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield England, 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death when fans arriving after kick-off, at an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, packed into an already overcrowded standing terracing area crushing the unsuspecting supporters in the front row up against metal fencing resulting in many deaths from suffocation.

∙ April 11, 2001 at the Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa, a stampede at an 'Orlando Derby' soccer match between arch rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates led to the death of 43 supporters.

You might be wondering at this point what the foregoing incidents have to do with "Your Winner's Medal". If you were to place yourself at the scene of one of the tragedies minutes before mayhem erupted around you and the chances were 1-in-1 that you would be a victim of early death would you want to be warned in advance of the events that would unfold - to warn you of your soul passing through death prematurely into eternity. The reality is that those souls who lost their lives under such tragic circumstances never knew their time had arrived.

You could find yourself sitting in a stadium enjoying worldly entertainment and trusting the seat you are in not knowing that death awaits you minutes away.

Have you ever considered what happens to you when you die? What were the victims thinking of leading up to their deaths? Had they considered their eternal destination? Do you think they considered where their spirit would spend eternity? How about you? Have you thought about heaven and hell and whether these places do exist? Or do you think when you die it is just "Game Over".

You have received this because someone cares and loves you enough to ask that you will please read the information contained herein as it will not only save your life if applied, but also save you much pain.

The million dollar question to you is - Would you consider yourself to be a good person?

You have a conscience so please listen to the inner voice that tells you what is right action and what is wrong action. If you answered "Yes" - or something similar to being 'good' - it would not be out of the ordinary to see if that is in fact true. The way YOU can evaluate your 'goodness' is by using God's Moral Law (The Ten Commandments), His Standards. Do you think you have kept them? Let's see how you will fare...

Have you ever told a lie? Even as a supporter or athlete have you ever tried to deceive the referee / umpire or an opponent by trying to gain an unfair advantage - that is lying. What about, have you ever stolen anything? The value or size of the object is irrelevant. Be honest and listen to your conscience.

Have you ever committed adultery? You don't have to be married to break this law. Jesus said, "Whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" - Matthew 5:28. Have you looked with lust / sexual desire? This is also an offence to women who look with lust at men. A woman who dresses seductively to seduce men's eyes and cause them to lust after her is called an adulteress (Proverbs 6:24-29). Or have you had sex outside of marriage (fornication)? Have you ever used God's Holy name in vain - as a swear word? This is blasphemy and God's Word says He will hold all who violate this law to be guilty. Possibly you have hated someone by calling them names - you will be judged as a murderer for you have committed murder in your heart. What about abortion?


If you have answered "yes" to any of the above questions God sees you as a liar, a thief, an adulterer-at-heart, a blasphemer and a murderer. These are only five of the Ten Commandments that you have answered to, and there are still five more cannons of God's Law pointed at you. Have you always placed God as number one in your life or do you bow the knee or worship idols and false gods? This is idolatry and the Bible says idolaters will be cast into the lake of fire. The Word of God says that if you break one commandment at any point, you have broken the whole Law (at every level). Therefore you have broken all the commandments and wrath is against you. If God were to judge you by His Moral Standards on the Day of Judgment do you think you will be innocent or guilty? And if you are reasonable and you are guilty, do you think you will go to heaven or hell? Breaking God's Law will make it reasonable that you will go to hell - His prison. Does this concern you?

It should concern you, because I am concerned for you too. The Bible says: Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. - 1 Corinthians 6:9,10.

And in Revelation 21:8 the Holy Scriptures read: "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars - their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death."

At this point, take note that it is not the will of God to want to send you to hell. Do you know what God did for you 2000 years ago? Do not deceive yourself - you are not good. You are a sinner; evil and wicked just as the rest of us are. God is Good. In His mercy and grace towards you and all humanity God became a Man to die in your place. It is like this - you broke God's Law and He paid your fine in His Son's precious life's blood. Jesus Christ the sent Messiah was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin named Mary and who came to dwell amongst us as Immanuel (God with us). In obedience to His Father, the Lord Jesus lay down His life for all sinners and was sacrificed in your and humanity's place upon the cross at Calvary. He was crucified, bruised and crushed for our lawlessness. Jesus the sent Saviour of the world took the full extent of God's Law upon Himself to die in your place. He was laid in a tomb and on the third day He was raised to life by the power of the Holy Spirit defeating death and the grave. There were on many occasions witnessing that He was raised from the dead and Jesus ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of God the Father interceding on our behalf from where He will one day return to "judge the world in Righteousness." - Acts 17:31

The Bible says that the only way to enter into heaven is to be reborn of the Spirit and be baptised in water. You need to humble yourself as a sinner before God and ask Him to forgive your lawless sins, repent of (turn away and forsake) your sin and put your trust and faith only in the Lord Jesus as your Saviour and Redeemer who saved you from death. Then you will move from death to life and you will be reconciled to God as His child and God will grant you His gift of eternal life. God will not forsake you as it is impossible for God to lie. Then read your Bible daily and believe and live out what it tells you.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16

Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." - John 14:6

So, why wait for 2010 to be a 'winner'? Get right with God today.

To Save The Lost

Christ's call is to save the lost, not the stiff-necked; He came not to call scoffers but sinners to repentance; not to build and furnish comfortable chapels, churches, and cathedrals at home in which to rock Christian professors to sleep by means of clever essays, stereotyped prayers, and artistic musical performances, but to capture men from the devil's clutches and the very jaws of Hell. This can be accomplished only by a red-hot, unconventional, unfettered devotion, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to the Lord Jesus Christ.

C.T. Studd (1860-1931. Studd is remembered both as a cricketer and missionary. As a British Christian missionary who faithfully served His Saviour in China, India and Africa he was part of the Cambridge Seven, and later founded the Heart of Africa Mission which became the Worldwide Evangelisation Crusade, now known as WEC International. His motto was: "If Jesus Christ is God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him.")

When Persecution Comes

Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. ~ 2 Timothy 3:12 NKJV

If you are truly living for God then persecution is inevitable. For "all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution." But God will provide and you will be able to stand firm in the evil day.

When Peter wrote his first epistle to the various churches in Asia they were in a state of bewilderment because of all the persecution they were facing. So Peter wrote to encourage them and give them advise.

Persecution is par for the course, they must expect it and hang in there and in the meantime strengthen themselves. How? "As new born babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby" (1 Peter 2:2).

There Is Only One Way!!

This past Sunday, my wife Tammy, my 13-year-old son Chad, our 18-month-old grandson Cee-Jay (who is under our foster care) and myself did Church which has now become our normal way - Church the Book of Acts' style. This is another story on its own how we have become to be doing home Church.

The short version of the long story is we have moved out of the mainstream institutional church buildings with its predominately false teachings, prosperity gospel and a doctrine that speaks only about God's love for everyone with little-to-no preaching on the just and holiness of God, of the Law, sin, judgment and hell. As a family we now do Church where our Lord Jesus Christ is the True Head of His organic Church. We pray, give glory to God and read Scripture - sharing with each other and allowing the Holy Spirit to have His way and to lead us. We are new at this particular way of Church and we are sure we will grow as the home Church movement gains momentum under God's guiding Hand.

We read the Apostle Paul's second epistle to Timothy in its entirety as a family and I preached and expounded on the particular Scriptures 2 Timothy 3:15 - 4:5 which reads as follows (emphasis added):

15and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 1I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: 2preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. 5But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Earlier - shortly before 9am CAT - I had been thinking about witnessing to Jehovah Witnesses who live on a street corner a block away from our apartment. Further Scripture I preached to my wife and son were the Deity of Jesus Christ and Almighty God (in preparation for my hopeful meeting with the JW's). The first reading was Matthew 1:23 - 23"BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." this reading was confirmed with Isaiah 8:8,10 -

8"Then it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass through,
It will reach even to the neck;
And the spread of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.
10"Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted;
State a proposal, but it will not stand,
For God is with us."

I then proceeded to read the prophecy of Isaiah 9:2-7 with emphasis on verse 6 (emphasis added) -

6For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Scripture points to Mighty God as being Jesus Christ incarnate in human form for the prophecy was fulfilled in the Gospels and the New Testament - Jesus Christ being fully God and fully Man without sin. Scripture always confirms Scripture - in light thereof Genesis 1:1-5 and John 1:1-14 testifies that Jesus is the Word (verse 14) - 14And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Further Scriptures to confirm Jesus Christ as Almighty God is found in -

Exodus 3:14 - 14God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'"

John 8:58 - 58Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."

Mark 14:62 - 62And Jesus said, "I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."

John 10:30 - 30"I and the Father are one."

We had placed upon our hearts to also go around the neighbourhood distributing two Gospel tracts (I have designed) being the "2010" and "Do You Think You Will RIP?" into postboxes and to engage our neighbours in conversation by proclaiming the Law and the Gospel of Grace. When I looked out our window to see if the JW's were home, their vehicle was not to be seen in their backyard. But to my surprise I thought I saw a lone ranger Mormon clad in "black-and-white" doing our neighbourhood (later I was to realise he was a JW due to the material hereunder - from the Watchtower).


At this point I was hurrying my family members to make haste in getting ready - we needed to be out there on the streets; when we did get out there he had already left his material about their cult. We proceeded to leave our Gospel tracts in any accessible postbox as we wanted Truth and the True Deity of Jesus Christ to be out there.

I don't like trying to second-guess our Father God; but what was He showing us? No Jehovah Witnesses and mistaken Mormons. We proceeded into Alexander Park - a stone's throw away from where we were. I had prayed leaving our apartment block for opportunities and none seemed available. (My shallow thinking - I repent!!) There was a game of cricket taking place in the park so we went in search of fish. There were some young African teenagers and a few older men playing cricket. Thank you Father - I encountered four young men and engaged them with the Law and took them through the Gospel once they realised they had violated God's Holy standards. At the time they were warming up away from the greater group of players. They appeared to be open to what I proclaimed about their eternal destiny, but I thank the Lord the best was yet to come.

(I was so caught up in wanting to evangelise I didn't even think about taking photos) On approaching the cricket match in progress I handed out Gospel tracts to those persons sitting under the trees next to the playing field. I then stood in the midst of them and started asking the question what would happen to them the day they die? There were about 20-30 people who were in various stages of listening or not listening to what I had to say as I took them through the Law. How many lies have you told? Have you stolen anything (the size and value of the object doesn't matter)? Have you ever looked with lust? Jesus said whoever looks with lust at a woman has already committed adultery with that person in their heart (Matthew 5:28). What about murder? You don't have to engage in the physical act of murder, but you can use your mouth and thoughts to commit murder. If you hate a brother or call someone bad, nasty names you are a murderer at heart. When God judges you by His Holy standard He will see you as a lying thief, adulterer at heart and a murderer at heart - so, will you be innocent or guilty on the Day of Judgment? There were those who professed that they wouldn't be guilty, but I had to bring it to their understanding that they would be guilty before a Holy and Just God. It was about this stage that the issue of Shembe (Zulu - pronounced Shem-bear) came up.

Shembe is to the African culture what Mohammad is to Islam. Shembe professes to be "the way" for the black man in Africa. He is the black man's god - not all Africans ascribe to Shembe, there are millions of Christians. To see what Shembe believers follow please visit these two links -

Charismatic Shembe thriving

So here I am speaking to some Shembe followers and there was peace evident in how I related with them and they with me. Glory to God for always being in control. I told them that Shembe professes to be the way, but Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me (John 14:6). Therefore, either Jesus or Shembe was lying and not telling the truth, but it is impossible for God to lie. I told them that believing in Shembe and saying that he represents the black man - it is them believing that he will save them because of the colour of their skin. They raised the point that Jesus is only for the white man, but I told them that if they had to cut themselves and I had to cut myself the colour of our blood is red. So is it with the blood of Jesus. Our sins are forgiven by the precious blood of Jesus - for life is in the blood and not in the colour of a man's skin. They realised that their culture tells them certain things and they believe them - like praying to ancestors. I told them that the Bible says that we only need to pray in the name of Jesus and we are to call on no other name but the name of Jesus. The enemy is blinding Africans' minds through culture and we as disciples of Christ need to be the light in the world they find themselves in. I told them that it doesn't really matter what they believe or if it has been past down through the generations from their grandparents and parents - what really matters is what is true. They therefore need to test what I had told them against true Scripture. Some said they would while others shrugged the warning off. We pray that through the proclamation of the Law and the Gospel which I shared with them that God became a Man in the person of Jesus Christ - fully God and fully Man without sin. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of a virgin named Mary - the birth was a supernatural birth - one of a kind never to be repeated. He dwelt among men and lived a perfect and sinless life giving us the pattern by which we are to live. Jesus - God in the flesh - went to the cross and paid a fine He did not owe for crimes He did not commit - we broke God's Laws and Jesus paid our fine, He took our punishment. We deserve to be crucified and to be thrown into hell as evil criminals against God, but Jesus graciously took the wrath of His Father for us. Jesus was laid in a tomb, and on the third day He took up His life forever defeating death and conquering the grave. There were more than 500 witnesses that testified to seeing Him alive and He has ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father.

Jesus has promised He will return on a day God has appointed to judge the world in righteousness (Acts 17:31) and what is required is that we humble ourselves before God and repent (turn from and forsake) our sins and trust only in the finished work of Jesus Christ alone. For we are saved by grace and grace alone that has been extended to sinners by a Good God and we can do nothing to earn salvation by what we have done lest no man can boast.


On leaving and heading home we came across three African men leaning over their third floor balcony. I engaged them in general conversation focusing on a soccer tournament taking place over the weekend. I then started proclaiming the Law outside a block of apartments. All glory to God for allowing me to preach in the open in a setting I have not previously done before. I took them through the Law and although the main gentleman was prideful bragging that he could still live for 10-20 years we told him that he must humble himself before God. If he should die in his sins he will have to pay the fine himself as God's wrath rests upon him. I proceeded to preach the gospel of Grace and the finished work of Jesus Christ upon the cross - although the man I was preaching to appeared that he wasn't really concerned about his eternal salvation - because we do not know who the wider audience were who got to hear the Law and the Gospel of Grace. It really does matter to Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, and Shembe followers and even followers of the religions of Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Seventh-Day Adventists, New-Age, New Scientists, Evolutionists, Atheists, Agnostics, Judaism, Roman Catholicism, Post-moderns and any other cult practice that their theology, doctrine and faith in the real and true Jesus are correct. If they are following after the wrong Jesus - or rejecting Him in their understanding - in their deception by the devil and not worshipping the One and only True and Living God Jesus Christ of Nazareth then their place will be assigned with their father and his demons in the lake of fire that burns with sulphur.

I humbly thank the Lord Jesus for a wonderful day of fishing and doing Church out in the open. And people got to hear that there is Only One Way for salvation and getting into heaven and that is through our Lord Jesus Christ. Certainly not Shembe - for there is no other way. Please pray for every person encountered (some of their Zulu names escape me for which I apologise, but to Lucky, Sbu and others - the Lord knows them by name) and that God will cause them to repent and believe the True Gospel of Jesus Christ in and through the Wonderful work of His Holy Spirit.

A Tribute To Gail Williams

Gayle Williams' wish comes true

Kabul - Surrounded by tight security, some 50 mourners gathered in the Afghan capital on Sunday for the funeral of Gayle Williams, a British-South African aid worker killed by Taliban gunmen on her way to work a week ago.

The killing, together with the shooting of a South African and a British man in the city on Saturday, has led to fears Taliban insurgents could target Westerners to scare off aid workers and undermine efforts to bring development and security.

The Taliban said they had killed Williams, 34, because she worked for SERVE Afghanistan, a British-based Christian aid organisation that the militants said was trying to convert Afghanistan's fiercely conservative Muslim population.

SERVE denies it tries to spread Christianity and says its work concentrates on teaching children with disabilities.

"A completely defenceless young woman with a heart of love for the people of Afghanistan, was walking alone to work to care for the people who were defenceless here in this country," said the man leading the service, who declined to be named.

"Two armed men gunned down a young defenceless girl. It is hard to see this as anything other than a cowardly act that brings shame on the people who carried out this murder," he said.

Family, friends and colleagues, including her mother Patricia and her sister Karen, attended the funeral at the British Cemetery in the heart of the city.

Dozens of police surrounded the cemetery and blocked roads to traffic, a stark reminder of Afghanistan's deteriorating security. Police patrolled the hill overlooking the ceremony.

Aid workers a target

Williams' mother sat beneath the shade of a tree, at times weeping as friends and colleagues paid tribute.

"Gayle was a special colleague, she was a precious sister to all of our SERVE staff," said one of Williams' colleagues.

"She was a joyful and courageous woman. We lost a dear co-worker."

In the weeks before her death, Williams had attended the funeral of a friend at the same cemetery and had expressed her desire to be buried there if she were to die in Afghanistan.

"Now we have seen this cemetery, and if I die here, I know where I will be laid to rest," Gayle had told friends.

A friend paying tribute, said Williams had discussed the possibility of one of them coming to harm in Afghanistan.

"'These bodies are only temporary. When I get to heaven I will have a new body'," Williams had told her friend.

Taliban insurgents have increasingly targeted aid workers this year in their campaign to spread an atmosphere of fear and undermine claims by the Afghan government and its Western backers that they are bringing security to the nation.

Some 4 000 people, a third of them civilians were killed this year.

There were more than 120 attacks on aid programmes in the first seven months of this year, the United Nations says. Thirty aid workers have been killed and 92 abducted.

The cemetery was built in the 1870's during the second Anglo-Afghan War and there are several headstones of British soldiers from that time, but most graves are of Kabul's European residents buried there up to the 1970s.

Following the funeral, Williams' mother and sister were taken to meet President Hamid Karzai who wished to express his condolences. - Reuters

So how are we to make disciples if we do not preach.

Romans 10:14-17 says: How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!"
However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, "LORD, who has believed our report?" So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
